Terms of service
The rules for using our software, our sites and your account, and for any work you commission from us. Written to be read rather than skipped. If something here strikes you as unfair, tell us and we will argue about it rather than hide behind it.
The short version. You are buying a licence to run our software on servers you operate, not the software itself. Where a product makes automated judgements, it will not catch everything, and the moderation decisions stay yours. Most sales go through BuiltByBit, so their terms cover the purchase and ours cover the software. Custom work has its own rules in section 8. If you are a consumer in the EU, nothing here takes away a right the law gives you.
1. Who we are, and what this covers
Sniffer Studio builds plugins and tools for Minecraft servers and operates as an independent studio based in the Czech Republic. “We” and “us” mean Sniffer Studio; “you” means the person or organisation using what we make.
These terms cover everything we run and everything we sell: our sites, the documentation and status pages, your dashboard, the configuration panels, our Discord, every plugin or tool you hold a licence for, and any work you commission from us.
Where a particular product carries its own additional terms, a data processing agreement for a hosted service for example, those sit on top of these and win on the points they cover. A signed quote for commissioned work does the same.
2. Accepting these terms
You accept them by buying a licence, creating an account, commissioning work, or using our software or sites. If you are agreeing on behalf of a company or a server team, you are confirming you may bind it.
You need to be old enough to enter a contract where you live, or to have your guardian's permission. Our accounts use Discord sign-in, so Discord's own minimum age applies as well.
3. Your licence
Subject to these terms and to payment, we grant you a non-exclusive, non-transferable, revocable licence to install and run the software on Minecraft servers you own, operate or administer, for as long as your licence is valid.
Unless we have told you otherwise for a particular product, a self-hosted licence is a one-time purchase for the version line you bought, including its updates, and anything we host for you is a subscription that runs while you keep paying for it. You are buying the right to use the software, not ownership of it, not its source, and not a share of the studio.
Your licence key identifies you. Anyone holding it can run the software as you, so treat it like a password. Where a product supports it, the key lives in a file of its own rather than in your main configuration, so you can paste your setup into a support thread without leaking the key.
4. Where you bought it
Almost every licence we sell goes through BuiltByBit. When it does, BuiltByBit is the seller: their terms govern the transaction, their policy governs the refund, and their dispute process is the one that applies to the payment. These terms govern the software you receive and the services we run around it.
If you buy directly from us, we are the seller and section 7 applies to the purchase. Commissioned work is always bought directly from us.
A licence obtained anywhere else, resold, forwarded or found, is not a licence. We will not support it and we may disable it.
5. What you may not do
- Share, resell, sublicense, rent or publish your licence key.
- Redistribute our software, on a leak site or anywhere else.
- Decompile, patch or otherwise work around licensing, except where the law expressly gives you that right and we cannot contract it away.
- Run it on servers you do not operate or administer.
- Use it to profile, stalk or surveil people rather than to run your server. See section 9.
- Attack our services: probing them, hammering them, or trying to reach another customer's data.
6. Your account
You are responsible for what happens under your account and your licence keys, including anything a member of your staff does with them. Tell us promptly if you think either has been taken. We may suspend an account while we look into a security problem.
7. Payment, renewal and refunds
Prices are shown before you buy and include VAT where it applies. Subscriptions renew for the same period until cancelled, and you can cancel any time before the next renewal.
If you are a consumer in the EU or EEA you normally have 14 days to withdraw from a distance purchase. Software is digital content delivered immediately: when you ask for it straight away and acknowledge that doing so ends your right of withdrawal, that right stops once the download begins. You will be asked to confirm this at the point of purchase. If you have not downloaded the software, the 14 days still stand.
Beyond that, if a product does not do what we said it does, tell us. We would rather refund you than argue. Section 10 sets out what we do and do not claim our software does.
Purchases made through BuiltByBit are refunded under BuiltByBit's policy, by BuiltByBit. Commissioned work is covered by section 8 instead.
8. Custom work and commissions
We sometimes build to order: a private plugin, a feature that only your server needs, an integration with something you already run. That is sold differently to a licence, so this section governs it.
- Scope is what the written quote says. Price, deliverables and an estimated timeline are agreed in writing before work starts. Anything not written down is not in scope, and asking for it later means a new quote.
- Payment. We normally take a deposit before starting and the balance on delivery. Once work has started, the deposit covers the work already done and is refundable only to the extent it exceeds it.
- What you get. Unless the quote says otherwise, you receive the same kind of licence as in section 3: the right to run the result on servers you operate. We keep ownership of the source and stay free to reuse general techniques and non-specific code elsewhere. Exclusivity, source access or a full transfer of ownership are all possible, and all priced separately in the quote.
- Revisions. The quote says how many rounds are included and what counts as one. Changing your mind about the scope is a requote, not a revision.
- Timelines are estimates. We tell you as soon as we know one is slipping. If we need something from you, access, a test server, a decision, the clock pauses until we have it.
- We may decline. We will not build something unlawful, or something designed to harm players or evade another platform's rules, and we may stop work that turns out to be one of those. If we stop for that reason we refund the part not yet worked.
- Support. What we support after delivery, and for how long, is what the quote says. It is not the same as the ongoing support that comes with an off-the-shelf licence.
9. Your responsibilities to your players
This is the part that matters most, and it is on you rather than on us. Several of our products handle data about the people on your server: what they say in voice chat, what they type, how they behave. You decide to run them, so under the GDPR you are the controller of that processing.
- Tell your players. Where a product requires a notice, it will not start without one, and you must not weaken it into something misleading.
- Give them a way out where the product offers one, and honour it.
- Have a lawful basis for the processing, and follow the rules that apply where your players are.
- Use it to run your server. Not to build dossiers on people, not to hand transcripts or logs to anyone with no business reading them.
- Mind who is on your server. If your players are children, the bar for what is lawful is higher, and it is yours to clear.
Most of our products process everything on your own hardware, and in that case the data never reaches us at all. Where you use something we host, we process on your behalf and a separate data processing agreement applies.
10. What our software does, and what it does not
Several of our products make automated judgements: transcribing speech, matching a pattern, flagging behaviour that looks wrong. All of that is probabilistic. Accents, background noise, cheap microphones, unusual setups and deliberate evasion all make it less reliable.
So, plainly: our software will miss things, and it will occasionally flag something innocent. Where we publish an accuracy figure, it is a measurement taken under stated conditions and an honest one, but it is not a promise about your server. We do not guarantee that any particular thing will be caught, and we do not guarantee that a flag is correct.
The decisions remain yours. Automatic actions do what you configured them to do. Review them, keep a human in the loop for anything serious, and do not treat an automated flag as proof of what somebody said or did.
11. Availability and support
We aim to keep our services up and we publish what they are doing at status.snifferstudio.net, but we do not offer an uptime guarantee unless we have given you one in writing. Self-hosted installations keep working whether or not our services are up; licence checks tolerate us being unreachable.
Support runs through Discord and [email protected], in English and Czech, on a best-effort basis.
12. Updates, compatibility and third parties
We ship updates, including security fixes, and we may change how a feature works when there is a good reason. We will not remove something you paid for without telling you first.
Our software depends on things we do not control: Minecraft, your server software, and whatever mods your players run. When those change, ours can break. We follow as quickly as we sensibly can, but we cannot promise a date, and a compatibility gap is not a defect in what you bought.
Anything we label beta or experimental is exactly that. It can change or disappear, and it comes with no promises at all.
13. Our intellectual property
Our software, our sites, our documentation and the Sniffer Studio name stay ours. Your configuration, your logs and your server's data stay yours. Commissioned work is covered by section 8. If you send us feedback we may act on it without owing you anything for it, and thank you: most of what improves our products arrives that way.
14. Ending it
You may stop using our software at any time. Cancelling a subscription stops the next renewal; it does not refund the period you are in.
We may suspend or end your licence if you break sections 5, 6 or 9, or if you charge back a payment instead of talking to us. Where the breach is fixable we will say what is wrong and give you a chance to fix it first. If we end your licence without cause, we refund the unused part.
When a licence ends, stop using the software and remove it from your servers.
15. Warranties and liability
Beyond what we say in these terms and in our documentation, our software is provided as is, without further warranty, to the extent the law allows.
To the extent the law allows, our total liability to you is limited to what you paid us in the twelve months before the claim. We are not liable for what your players say or do, for something our software failed to catch, for a player wrongly punished, or for lost profit, lost players or reputational harm following from any of those.
We do not exclude liability for death or personal injury caused by our negligence, for fraud, or for anything else that cannot lawfully be excluded. If you are a consumer, your statutory rights are unaffected by anything in this section.
16. Changes to these terms
We may change these terms. For anything material we will give at least 30 days' notice through the dashboard, a panel or Discord before it takes effect, and the date at the top of this page will change. Continuing to use the product after that is acceptance. If you would rather not accept, cancel, and if you are mid-subscription we will refund the unused part.
17. Law, disputes and contact
These terms are governed by Czech law, and the Czech courts have jurisdiction. If you are a consumer, this does not remove the protection of the mandatory law where you live, or your right to bring a claim there.
Consumers in the Czech Republic may also take a dispute to the Česká obchodní inspekce (Czech Trade Inspection Authority), adr.coi.cz, at no cost. We would much rather you came to us first.
If a clause here turns out to be unenforceable, the rest stands. Not enforcing something once does not mean giving it up. You may not transfer these terms to somebody else without our agreement; we may transfer them if the studio changes hands, and will tell you if that happens.
